SOCIETY OF RECORDER PLAYERS (NZ) INC

ABOUT THE SOCIETY

The society was founded in 1953 as an offshoot of the Adult Education Centre in Auckland, until in the mid 1960's it became an independant entity. Since then the society has matured and now has members of all ages and abilities throughout New Zealand.

OUR AIMS

  • To provide opportunities for recorder players to meet for playing

  • To encourage recorder consorts

  • To provide a library of music

  • To improve the standard of recorder playing and encourage the authentic interpretation of recorder music

  • To inform people about concerts, music schools and other events of interest

  • To keep in contact with recorder players both in New Zealand and overseas

OUR ACTIVITIES

Playing meetings are held in the Auckland region on an ad hoc basis, these may vary in format and content but there is always a cup of tea.

The society runs annual weekend music schools, which involve players and tutors from throughout the country.

All members receive quarterly newsletters and our annual publication "Recorder News"

An annual concert is held in Auckland, usually in conjunction with the Auckland Early Music Society. This gives members a chance to perform as well as be entertained. Participation is purely voluntary.

Various other musical events are organised as opportunities arise. In the past, these have included Midwinter Solstice celebrations, playing in community festivals, at church services and in the Auckland Museum, barbeques and combined playing meetings with other early music groups.

THE BARBARA MCEWEN MEMORIAL LIBRARY

The society has an extensive library of recorder music, which is amongst the most comprehensive collections of recorder music in the Southern Hemisphere. It contains in excess of 1400 titles ranging from the Renaissance to present day and covering a wide variety of composers including several from New Zealand. There are also recorder technique books and journals available.
