Indy's Ranger Artifacts for the week of 9-30-01
Message:

Fellow Rangerphiles,

Well, this adventurer's still without a web site at the moment. Geocities hasn't seen fit to give me back my old one, so now I definitely will begin the quest to get it back up in earnest. I plan to have it back up and running (in some form anyway) by the next Artifacts article. That of course means no artifact this week, but I shall not be daunted. Look for something good to develop next week.

Now, for the week that was...

We begin with yet another debut of a great Rangerphile artist that's conveniently named Artist. Easy to remember, and hard to forget what with that excellent picture of Gadget dreaming. I don't know if everyone noticed, but TOZ alerted us that Artist did a second picture and it was also very good. Great work, Artist, and we hope to see much more from you!

Loneheart brought us a new question on Tuesday--we were actually quiet one whole day, imagine!--and wondered who would face off with the Rangers if the Rangers were evil. That led into a bunch of Negaverse speculation, and while certainly not a consensus the opinion seemed to be that if the Rangers were evil that they wouldn't have the same kind of teamwork and cooperation they do now. If the bad guys were good guys, then they of course could team up. Fat Cat and Kitty Crusaders? Now that's tough to imagine.

8-Bit-Star brought up a good point. Writers who post to the Story Board are more than free to alert the regulars at the Cafe by posting here as well. My recommendation is to keep it brief and to the point, and of course to avoid the use of all-caps or anything else that violates Cafe rules. I want to do all I can to encourage the new and veteran writers to keep contributing, as fanfiction is a major part of what makes this community what it is.

On Wednesday, Rem alerted us to new pics of his own at the NGS (New Gallery Structure) site. Again, great work and I liked the one with Gadget holding out that bolt. The other was cute, too ;-)

Also on Wednesday, Ray Jones brought us new pictures by Rebekah and Morgan K. Great work again, folks, and it's certainly true that you just can't get enough of Gadget.

Brian Walmer alerted us on another update to his story, "The Big Goodbye". Again, all-caps should be avoided on alerts, but I appreciate every Rangerphile author so keep it coming, Brian!

Then we have most likely the longest thread I've seen in quite some time. And I have only one question--what's it about, exactly? I know it started with MChet's picture of Dale, which was very good and cute, btw. Then it went in about six different directions, mainly fun and casual conversations on Dale Arrendale, Rangerphiles who aren't artists and lament the fact, and a discussion on the shortcomings of Disneyland. I'm glad to see that we do still have time for general conversations around here, because it means the Cafe is vital and strong.

On Friday, Nelson mentioned that he liked Chip's high-pitched scream, and MChet noted that he liked Dale's just as much. I must admit, the time when Dale came out of the Emporer's room screaming like a wild man (munk?) in "Song of the Night 'n Dale" still gives me a chuckle.

Rikirk had a birthday on Friday as well. Happy birthday, and how many did this make? I'd have done my special number trick, but you didn't tell me. We should also note that this is the first time we've seen a birthday greeting in Norwegian (I hope I'm right about that).

PacersFan posting, saying he needed inspiration when it came to getting a story up and particuarly where villains are concerned. I'm glad to see that he got some advice, and I'll add a couple points of my own. Always remember that the characters drive the story, and no matter how spectuclar your ideas, if the characters aren't well-developed or don't work together well then the story will fizzle. Also, remember that conflict is the point that creates change in the characters, not the villains. The villains can contribute to conflict, but it's ultimately what affects the characters and forces them to develop that's important.

Mr. Pi brought us an animation! That's two we've had in recent days, and this one was of Gadget. Very smooth work, Mr. Pi, and it reminds me of what you'd see on a watch face. Also, Mr. Pi finished up his RR/Simpsons crossover pics with one of Lisa/Foxglove. I must say, your creativity knows no bounds ;-)

On Saturday, Paul Sebert alerted us to an auction on e-bay of a clay model of Gadget created by the ever-creative Rebekah. The clay model was very good, but I enjoyed that picture of Gadget on the auction page a lot more :-) Again, a note of caution whenever dealing with materials created by a private individual from copyrighted characters. You're free to do as you will, but be aware that you the buyer can be held liable for infringement. Just a fair warning, which I always feel it my duty to give in my capacity.

Electra/TheBoz alerted us that he (sadly) is closing his RR site down. TheBoz's Gadget Hackwrench Page was one of the first I came upon as a newbie to the online community, thus it holds a special place in my memory. I do hope one of you will keep it going, and as TheBoz says update and promote it. The Ranger Code is one such area, and one that I've neglected myself. I'll post my Ranger Code in the next Artifacts article, and I encourage the rest of you to do so as well.

Ares posted today, letting us know that rrstuff.net is back online. Glad to know that we've got lots of choices when it comes to RR sites, as that's also an important part of keeping the community lively. Great work, Ares, and keep it up! Oh, and that reminds me, we have Ranger Poll results! Thanks again to Ares, for hosting the poll!

1.  I am so out of it! I don't recognize any of the names in the list!!! Aaaaiiieeeeeee!!
2. Tress MacNeille is a bit versatile with voices, so guess what? I voted for her
3. Ever heard Glenne Headley in "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"? She sound
uncannily like Foxy in that film!
4. It goes "full-circle"; Gadget's lookalike will be played by the voice of Gadget(who I thought did so in the *first place*!! ;-)
5. Could get Dev Ross, the voice director for all the CDRR episodes to do it. She was Deborah's best friend too.
6. It's a good question, but I'd really need samples to make any sort of judgment. The idea of hearing actresses in movies who sound like Foxglove is a good one...and I still like the idea of using another "Gidget," but maybe that's just me.
7. It's a good question, but I'd really need samples to make any sort of judgment. The idea of hearing actresses in movies who sound like Foxglove (or Louwhiney...I should learn to proofread...) is a good one...and I still like the idea of using another "Gidget," but maybe that's just me.

MChet gives us a picture of Foxy and Dale, with our favorite bat holding him up. What are you worrying about, pally? It's a great picture! You must've drawn it fast, though, because Foxy can only hold him up like that for a few seconds. Fastest pen in the west ;-)

And finally, Race posts a question that hits at the heart of all us Rangerphiles--our beloved Rangers' creators still don't make it easy to see them! Toon Disney is all but inaccessible, and I won't buy the Disney Channel again until the Rangers are back on it. I've noticed that Disney's taken a big financial hit lately. Does anyone live near enough Bill Gates to pay him a visit? We ought to recruit him into the group, so we can start up the Gadget theme parks ASAP. I have a feeling he'd be a very big Gadgephile, if only someone made him aware. Something tells me Microsoft would have a new mascot ;-)

Well, that's it for this week, faithful readers. I hope to be back on my digital feet by this time next week, and maybe there'll be a surprise or two. Until then, if your father's a professor of medieval literature, don't take that quiet exterior for granted. He might just be 007 ;-)
