Site Dedication

This web site is dedicated to the memory and inspiration of Lou Palmer, known
as “Blind Lou Palmer." This is him with his friend, Jack Dempsey.
Lou
Palmer was a professional featherweight boxer who fought around the same time
as Jack Dempsey, one of the toughest men who ever entered the ring.
Lou
palmer lost his sight in an accident unrelated to boxing, and became a poet,
philosopher and humanitarian. During his career, sports writers called him one
of the greatest featherweights of his era.
After
losing his sight, he traveled across the country, making annual visits to his
many sports writer and editor friends, visiting and donating half of the proceeds
of his writings to youth sports programs and playgrounds.
As
one of them wrote, "he lost his eyesight, but not his courage."
Portions
of his writings were used in speeches by John F. Kennedy in 1962 and 1963, and
by Pope John Paul II in 1978.
Here
is one of his poems, titled:
I'm
in Love With the World-I'm In Love.
Some
people sigh,
Some people cry,
When their rainbow of luck they can't find;
I never sigh,
I never cry,
Sunshine or rain I don't mind.
I'm happy-go-lucky,
Why shouldn't I be?
I'm in love with the world, I'm in love;
The birds in the treetops
Are singing for me.
I'm
no millionaire, but what do I care
As long as I share in someone's sympathy.
When I feel the bliss
Of
that certain one's kiss,
I'm in love with the world, I'm in love;
Why worry when yesterday has passed
And will never return;
Today we live and correct mistakes
We made in the past;
Tomorrow has not yet come,
So let's enjoy ourselves while we can,
For God Almighty and not money
Regulates weather and death;
So live every day for Peace,
Love and Humanity.
