Karter Letter Association - by Jason at 2:03 pm

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past...um...hour...then you should know by now that the results for the Karter Letter Association are in.

In the event that you are not Michael Liem, though, you might need a little more information to have any chance at understanding me.

Karter Letter Association is an idea I had in order to see which MK64 player people thought of most for each letter of the alphabet. The rules were pretty simple. Basically, list the first name that came to mind within 10 seconds, and if nothing was there, blank votes were accepted. No PL use was allowed for obvious reasons.

Overall, the results were interesting, and often funny, so even if you didn't participate in it, you might be able to enjoy the results. Also, if you didn't participate in it, but you really, really want to, too bad. You have missed your opportunity. Let the crying begin.

Top 100s, ARRs & AvgFins Updated - by Michael at 7:03 am

Here comes the activity report, grouped by non-shortcut kartrank:

Legend
Michael Jongerius got more big improvements, and passed Miller, Bukrim and P. Elsaesser for a #10 place at the ARR list!
Ruokai Chen managed to pass Brandon Eberly at nonSC AvgFin. Brandon however, is the first of the two players who reached the Legend C rank. The next player in front of them is Lars Nouwen, who also got active and improved one ARR point.

King
Thomas Grandjean made some impressive PRs and climbed 6 spots for a 30th place at both the ARR and AvgFin rankings. He's just a few points away from King A.
Zack Kennedy got many PRs, and also climbed 6 spots on both rankings, and he reached King D.

Elite
In the battle Laflamme/Almeida/Horst, it was Marcelo Almeida dos Reis who made the biggest impact since last update. He reached Elite A, and passed Simon Laflamme. Laflamme and Horst also improved some PRs, but are still ranked Elite B. Kevin Horst also managed to hit the "Mylestyle" shortcut at Luigi Raceway, which gave in an 8th place on the fastlap.
And another player looks forward to joining the battle: Jean-Francois Dubreuil made some huge improvements again, climbing from Elite D to Elite B! So, he's now definitely promoted from the Master/Pro battle of last week to battle of the high Elites...

Master/Pro
Frank DiNicola managed to stay in front of the other players in these ranks, and he managed to reach Elite F. Todd Worcester climbed from Pro A to Master C. Pier-Yves Lemire made a comeback to the competition, and went from Pro C to Master C.

Semi-Pro/Expert
Simon Lessard and Mike Eklund stayed extremely close to eachother. Last week they were ranked #139 and #143 respectively at ARR. This update their ranks are #126 and #127 (both ranked Semi-Pro D)! At AvgFin, Eklund is 3 spots ahead of Lessard. And if you still don't believe they're close, just check out their matchup...
A new player has joined: Dan Edeen enters the competition at #121 in nonSC Average Finish, and #120 (Semi-Pro D) in ARR.

I noticed some players wondered when the profiles will get updated. William Lacey is the person in charge of the profiles. I don't know on which days he'll do them. But if you want to view your current times, you can also go to the Times Viewer (under "Statistics" at the menu at the left). That program was also created by William Lacey.

POW Updated + Small PL Touchup - by Kevin at 10:03 pm

Ok, I awarded week 2 and week 3 POWs for this month tonight. I figured I should do that, before I head out for a week. Anyhow, if you have anything to tell me in the next week, just email me about it, and I will get back to you next week.

Oh yes, and I'll fix the mirror on that yoshi pic when I get back too.

PL UPDATED - by Kevin at 11:03 pm

Well, I wanted to get more done, but I got absolutely flooded with IMs about this and that, so you know the drill. Anyhow, there are 20+ active karters this month alone, so I would be checking that ladder. Now that Michael J. has proven himself, he has FLEW up with his new validated times into the top 15! This might be a great time for you retired/semi-retired players to pick up the controller again, and see what you can do!

Top 100s, ARRs & AvgFins Updated - by Michael at 3:52 pm

Chen failed again to send me the database update on time. So, no PAL/NTSC rankings update today.
But the top100s and statistics are updated as usual.

Michael Jongerius validated and on fire!
Michael Jongerius has made a historical performance. At 22nd June, his times were frozen because he didn't have proof of his times. At 24th July I personally validated his times at his house. Between those 2 dates, Michael had massively improved his times. He managed to climb all the way up from King A to Legend B, or from #28 at Average Finish to #13! Such a massive improvement in such a short time is unheard of. This is easily the fastest rise in those ranks I've ever seen in the whole history of Mario Kart 64.

Six active legend players
The legend players suffered quite some losses in Average Finish statistics, because of the Jongerius rise. Nevertheless we had a nice number of active legends. Jason Whalls got a PR at Mario Raceway flap, which passed several players. Kevin Booth responded to that by also improving his PR on that track. Michael Liem improved his ARR score by hitting a PR on Rainbow Road. Ruokai Chen got slightly closer to Brandon Eberly in ARR and Average Finish statistics, but Brandon also did a good job this update. He's only one point away from hitting Legend C.

The Master/Pro battle
Three of the five battling Master/Pro players were active again this week. It looks like Jean-Francois Dubreuil has decided the battle. He made the biggest improvement again, climbed into the Elite ranks (Master B to Elite D), and passed 2 other active people (Linski and Broadwater). Frank DiNicola and Rob McFarland are now ranked at Master B and Master D respectively. Todd Worcester returned from inactivity. He climbed from Pro D to Pro B and might try to beat some of the players in front of him.

King/Elite
Mark Jones was a lonely active King this update. He did a good job by reaching King D and passing some players again.
Simon Laflamme, Marcelo Almeida dos Reis and Kevin Horst are all three ranked Elite B now. Marcelo Almeida dos Reis climbed some spots on both ARR and AvgFin. Simon Laflamme could just avoid getting passed in ARR. Kevin Horst went from Elite C to Elite B and is getting closer to Simon and Marcelo. Michael Linski and Ben Broadwater are other active elites.

Expert battle
The Expert rank also has its own battle. Simon Lessard (Expert B), Mike Eklund (Expert C) and Seb Fassam (Expert D) all had a rank improvement. Who'll be ranked on top next update?

Players List + Past Champs + 60 PAL VIDS - by Kevin at 9:35 pm

Ok, the players list is updated, and FIVE NEW MEMBERS have been added. Man, some people have made some amazing strides since you have last checked, but surprisingly, Eberly fought off Chen for now.

Also, I decided to update the past champions today. Sami Cetin has passed quite a few people in the number of days he has been champion. I was also one of those victims.

Lastly, they are finally here! 60 NEW PAL VIDEOS have reached me from the Miller Residence. I will be releasing the compressed versions to various servers. I will keep all of you posted on that, as it happens. For now, if there is a track that you need really bad, contact me on AIM.

Anyhow, that is all for now, and I've officially become the 2nd-least laziest member of the team with this update! Wouldn't wanna be confused with others...

Top 100s, ARRs & AvgFins Updated - by Michael at 10:36 am

I had a busy week, and a lazy member of the updating-team didn't care at all about doing his updating work. So I have to do it myself now. But finally here's the update.

Legends
Kevin Booth got 2 PRs. One of them was a nice improvement on Kalimari Desert flap. He passed 3 players with it, to get a NTSC-Worldrecord tie. Brandon Eberly was also active and got another step closer to Legend C.

The Pro/Semi-Pro battle
Of the 5 players I mentioned in the previous update, 4 players were active again. And for now, the winner of the battle is: Jean-Francois Dubreuil. He passed Verbickas and Briel, climbed from #107 to #86 on the ARR list, and his rank went from Pro F to Master B. Frank DiNicola followed very closely: He went from #111 to #91 and climbed from Semi-Pro B to Master F. Rytis Verbickas climbed from #101 to #94. Leif Briel improved his ARR score by a nice 1.5 points. However it's just bad luck for him that he got passed by those 3 other players.
And to make things even more interesting, a 5th player seems to have joined the battle. Rob McFarland returned from inactivity, he jumped from Semi Pro D to a Pro A rank, right between DiNicola and Verbickas.
Now, these 5 players are all just within 3 ARR points from eachother. So, the story will be continued next time...

Tons of other actives
Mark Jones passed 3 players for a 46th place at nonSC Average Finish. Anton Forsander passed 2 players for a 43rd place at the ARR list.
Marcelo Almeida dos Reis improved spectacularly from Elite D to Elite B. Kevin Horst passed a few players and is also close to hitting Elite B. Michael Linski and Ben Broadwater were also active in the elite ranks.
Seb Fassam improved 10 spots on the nonSC AvgFin rankings. Mike Eklund also got some PRs and barely avoided getting passed by Fassam. Both players are ranked Expert F now.

New players
Welcome to Adrian Darie, Alexandru Bisericanu, Simon Lessard, Robert Ostrowski. Adrian and Alexandru are friends of Elite player Alexandru Balahura. They are ranked Intermediate F and Apprentice B respectively. Simon Lessard enters the ranks at Expert C and #145 in nonSC AvgFin. Robert Ostrowski enters at Expert F and #156.

That was the news. Next time, I plan to update the PAL and NTSC rankings, provided that the updating team doesn't leave their work for me again.

Top 100s, ARRs & AvgFins Updated - by Michael at 10:00 am

Legend/King/Elite
Legend player Brandon Eberly returned from inactivity and improved his stats a little. He kept some margin with Ruokai Chen who's approaching quickly. Eise Smit kept making significant improvements and is now close to King F. Thomas Grandjean, Simon Laflamme and Mike Linski were other active people.

Strong Pro & Semi-Pro movement
A group of Pro and Semi-pro players is moving up towards the top 100 in non-shortcut. Leif Briel, Rytis Verbickas, Jean-Francois Dubreuil, Frank DiNicola and David Hehn all climbed several ranks. These players are fairly close to eachother (all ranked between #99 and #116 on the ARR list), so it will be interesting to see which of them will be making the biggest impact in the next weeks.
Advanced ranked player Seb Fassam climbed 5 spots at nonSC Avgfin.

New players
Welcome to Michael McKenzie and Kevin Horst. Kevin Horst made a spectacular entry to the nonSC ranks with a 71st place in AvgFin, and an Elite C rank! Michael McKenzie is a PAL player from Australia. He enters at #159 in Avg Fin, with an Advanced A rank.

POW Updated - by Kevin at 10:27 pm

Well, this was surprisingly one of the toughest pow decisions in the history of kart. I don't think I can remember a time when SIX PLAYERS have been in the race of a pow decision, but it happened this time.

Simon Laflamme and Zack Kennedy, were of course the favorites, but they took side sattle to players like Brent Wingert and Ruokai Chen that hit SCs, and even 2 others that you wouldn't even expect!

Well, it has been decided, so check it out!

Players List Updated - by Kevin at 9:27 pm

Anyhow, The site now works for me and everyone else, so I decided to quit slacking,and the players list is up. More new faces are there, and you will finally get to see Leif's Non-sc ranking, after having just one time in the public records for 4 years!

William Lacey's insane run has now been reflected on the list. Lastly, on next PL update, you will see 2 more new members even!

Top 100s, ARRs & AvgFins Updated - by Michael at 2:38 pm

The Top 100s and statistics are updated with times until 8th July.
Marcelo Almeido dos Reis made 21 non-shortcut PRs that made him climb from Master B to Elite D! His ARR score is equal to that of Michael Linski, who also had a rank promotion to Elite D.
Interesting news is the "comeback" of Leif Briel. That player submitted his Frappe Snowland SC flap PR, back in 1998. His time of 5"46 was a tied 3rd place in the world back then. And now, he has returned with a full set of non-shortcut times. His times are quite strong. He's ranked just outside the top100 in both AvgFin and ARR. His kartrank is Pro F.
Solid PR improvements were made by Ruokai Chen, Brent Wingert, Frank DiNicola, Mike Eklund, Dave Crawford and Simon Laflamme.

Top 100s, ARRs & AvgFins Updated - by Michael at 7:52 am

William Lacey shatters worldrecords
In the 3rd and 4th week of June, William Lacey made some amazing improvements. Check out the tables for Sherbet Land, Banshee Boardwalk, Koopa Troopa Beach, Kalimari Desert and Frappe Snowland. William got new 3lap-worldrecords for all those tracks! He's the person with the lowest ARR score now, and he passed Alex Penev on the average finish rankings, to get close to the numbers 1 and 2 in the world.

Other news
Other active players were: Ruokai Chen, Brent Wingert, Thomas Grandjean (ARR score improved by 0.4 points), Zack Kennedy (ARR score improved by 0.5 points), Simon Laflamme, Ben Broadwater, Asher Anderson, Frank DiNicola (22 spots climbed at the AvgFin list) and Mike Eklund.
And a new member has joined the competition. Welcome to Jean-François Dubreuil from Quebec, Canada. His current kartrank is semi-pro C in non-shortcut.

PL Updated - by Kevin at 5:55 pm

Nothing much, but I got the PL to reflect the stats til the end of the month. The Major WRs that Lacey set, and some various comebacks will not be reflected on the PL until the next update. For this update, I only shaded the new members, cause there will most likely be a fresh PL very soon.

WR/POW updated - by Kevin at 6:56 pm

First, the more simple part of this update. I have updated Ben Millers 2 WRs on Moo Moo Farm, and William Laceys 6 new marks in 4 different cups. It's also reflected in the WR points as well. Myles Bukrim is no longer a Non-sc world record holder, and Gallo only has 2 world records remaining.

Next, The POW got updated. At first, I thought Zack Kennedy was gonna steal the show, but once again, we had some unlikely hero's taking over the wins. I decided to award 2 awards during the week that Lacey got most his world records out of fairness to everyone else. If at all possible, make sure to get your personal records in as soon as possible, so the integrity of the POW awards can remain intact.

Anyhow, I'm gonna also place this on some of the other pages soon, but I was asked about the awards, and when the cutoffs where, so I am going to go ahead and list when each of the awards end. All times are in pacific time, since that is the time zone I live in, so most of you in the USA and Canada will be 2 or 3 hours ahead of me, and if your in the Europe group, this will be 8-11 hours of me. Australia is a totally different situation, for it can be anywhere from 14-20 depending on the time of the year, cause of the dateline. Anyhow, here we go:

POY= Jan 1st to Dec 31st obviously
POQ1= Ends March 31st
POQ2= Ends June 31st
POQ3= Ends September 31st
POQ4= Ends at the end of the year
POSW= From Dec 1st of previous year to Feb 31st
POSSP= Ends May 31st
POSSU= Ends August 31st
POSF= Ends November 31st
POM= End of Every Month
POW1= 1st to 8th of every month
POW2= 9th to 16th of every month
POW3= 17th to 24th of every month
POW4= 25th to the End Of Every Month

Many have asked why I broke it down this way. This is cause I didn't keep track of it from day one, and the best way for me to figure out the behind months for awards was to break it down in 8 day intervals. Plus,I didn't like to have different amounts of weeks or weeks running into months.

Also, it was brought up that the seasons actually finish officially not at the end of months. I probably should have just used the Quarter Awards, but cause of Andy Launspach in the Summer months, and the Feared 4, I decided to keep a seasonal award as well. It really was a June 1st to August 31st thing, so it has remained that way.

Lastly, I've gotten tons of questions on how the awards are decided. Basically, I just base it on any information I can get, like ARR improvment, or just plain achievments the player achieves or anything else that is relevant. I take the players ranking in account, cause face it, if we all start out a new kart game, were gonna rewrite our packs daily for at least a week, while we play this game, and 2-3 prs a day is an amazing achievement. It's very hard to decide a fair award, and the award was designed to recognize various players, and that is that. Just please keep in mind that this award is probably just as bad as the conversion rate if you think about it, so while I respect the fact that you may disagree with a decision on an award, for your own reasons, we still need to be able to co-exist as a community after an award is decided, so lets do what we can to respect everyone just how we'd like to be treated when we win an award.

Lastly, I've rearranged the main page again, so things are easier to find, so enjoy! Time to take a break for now, but later on, I might get out a late PL update before the next timesheet hits, well see.

Top 100s, ARRs & AvgFins Updated - by Michael at 1:10 pm

Some awesome Mario Kart 64 activity in the last week of this month.

Four new members!
Welcome to our latest new members:
Frank DiNicola is quickly improving his times after his first submission. He's ranked 143rd in non-shortcut Average Finish, with a nice Expert D rank. His Yoshi Valley Times are missing, so he can climb higher.
Asher Anderson and Rytis Verbickas are two strong NTSC players who joined the non-shortcut rankings at Pro C and Semi-Pro B respectively. Asher even entered the AvgFin ranks within the top 100 (98th place)!
Rene Wiedner is ranked 184th at AvgFinish, and his kartrank is Apprentice C.

King activity
Mark Jones made great progress in the Shortcut ranks. He climbed three spots for a 25th place at shortcut AvgFin, and went from Elite B to King F on the shortcut ARR list! Mike Nardone got a few PRs and made King D in nonSC. Zack Kennedy completed his strong month with some significant improvements in both nonSC and SC.

Elites
Simon Laflamme passed 4 players on the nonSC ARR list and is getting closer to Elite B. Eise Smit made a nice return to Mario Kart 64. He improved his ARR score significantly and reached Elite A! Eddie Lovins hit some last times before returning to the Goldeneye competition. Ben Broadwater made 6 new PRs and reached Elite F in non-shortcut!

Other ranks
Marcelo Almeida dos Reis made a big jump on the nonSC rankings, going from Pro C to Master B. It looks like he'll also reach Elite very soon. Mike Eklund replayed almost his complete set of records, and improved 9 full ARR points, going from Apprentice A to Advanced B.
