Thom Merrilin by Tim Gerstmar Height: ~5'10"
Hair: white
Eyes: blue
Age: at least 50
"Lean, he would have been tall if not for a stoop to his shoulders, but he moved in a spry fashion that belied his apparent age... Thick mustaches, as snowy as the hair on his head, quivered around his mouth, and his face was gnarled like a tree that had seen hard times... Blue eyes peered out from under bushy white brows, drilling into whatever he looked at." (The Eye of the World, 46)

The Candidates:
Sean Connery He's a great actor for sure, and I'm sure he could be great as Thom. For some reason, though, I just can't see him in the role.

Sam Elliot I've never seen this actor in action, but just from his picture, I can totally see him as Thom. He's got the bushy eyebrows and he wears a thick mustache well. There also seems to be a hint of energy belying his graying appearance.

Ian McKellen I've got no doubts at all that Ian McKellen could portray Thom and do it wonderfully. There's really not much more to say about it than that. I guess, if the question should actually ever arise, though, people would have to think about whether they'd want such a high-profile actor -- who's already an iconic figure for the classic fantasy -- to play a role in The Wheel of Time.

Patrick Stewart I think one of the best things about Patrick Stewart that would be great for Thom is something you can't see. It's his voice. He's just got that kind of voice that can really pull you in to what he's saying, and then, when he really wants you to listen to what he's saying, he can turn on the resonance and bring an extra amount of character and life to his words. That's just how I imagine Thom would sound, as if all the world was a stage and everyone in it, his audience.
