Chronology

2560 BCE

[The Great Pyramid]Pharaoh Khufu orders the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza, to serve as a tomb when he dies.  The construction is observed by time-traveling anthropologists from 2769.

"Cold Front" (ENT).  Date taken from historical accounts.

850 BCE

[P'Jem]The Vulcan monastery of P'Jem is constructed on a distant planet.  It will ultimately become a sanctuary for the private study of Kolinahr.

"The Andorian Incident" (ENT).  Three thousand years before the episode (2151).  Note that this places its construction before the Time of Awakening that introduced logical unemotionalism, the stated purpose of the monastery.  I conjecture that the monastery was initially constructed for the study of a pre-Awakening religion and later adapted to Kolinahr.  It is also possible that Tucker didn't actually know the monastery's age and was speaking colloquially.

370

[Surak]The philosopher Surak leads reforms on Vulcan, ending that planet's history of horrible violence.  Many Vulcans reject his teachings of logic and emotional control, preferring the martial tradition.  In protest, they leave Vulcan to found a new empire in the stars.  The reformation becomes known as the Time of Awakening.

"Gambit, Part II" (TNG).  Two thousand years before the episode (2370).  Surak was established in "The Savage Curtain" (TOS) and referred to in "The Andorian Incident" (ENT).  The travelers, of course, become the Romulan Star Empire, though that won't be discovered until "Balance of Terror" (TOS) in 2266.

869

[Kahless the Unforgettable]Kahless the Unforgettable defeats the tyrant Molor and founds the Klingon Empire on Kronos.  Kahless becomes a legendary figure, said to have performed many supernatural feats.  According to Klingon mythology, he will return on planet Boreth and lead the empire again.

"Rightful Heir" (TNG).  Fifteen centuries before the episode (2369).  Kahless was established in "The Savage Curtain" (TOS).

1372

The Hur'q invade Kronos, pillaging the planet and stripping it of value.

"The Sword of Kahless" (DS9).  One thousand years before the episode (2372).

The last vestige of Vulcan's emotional past, the hedonistic Rumarie celebration, is held for the last time.

"Meld" (VGR).  One thousand years before the episode (2372)

1937

Irving Langmuir coins the term plasma to refer to ionized gas.  By the twenty-second century, plasma is widely used for weapons, power generation, and propulsion.

Historical accounts.

2 July.  Amelia Earhart attempts to fly around Earth in an aircraft, but disappears over the Pacific Ocean.  She is believed to have crashed.

"Terra Nova" (ENT) and historical accounts.  Earhart is seen in the opening credits of Enterprise.  She was actually abducted by aliens, though this won't be known until "The 37's" (VGR) in 2371.

1947

[Yeager breaks the sound barrier]14 October.  Chuck Yeager pilots the Glamorous Glennis aircraft faster than the speed of sound, a milestone in aviation.

Historical accounts.  Yeager and his plane are seen in the opening credits of Enterprise.

1969

[Apollo 11 launches]16 July.  The Apollo 11 mission launches for Luna, the first human attempt to land on a planet other than Earth.

"Tomorrow Is Yesterday" (TOS) and historical accounts.  Several pieces of footage from Apollo missions are shown during the opening credits of Enterprise, though they may or may not be Apollo 11 specifically.

1977

[Space Shuttle Enterprise]The space shuttle Enterprise is used for flight testing.

Historical accounts.  Footage of the shuttle Enterprise being unveiled--ironically, with members of the Star Trek cast and crew present--is used in the opening credits of Enterprise.  The shuttle never actually flew into space.

1998

[The International Space Station]November.  The International Space Station begins construction.

Historical accounts.  The International Space Station assembly is shown during the opening credits of Enterprise.

2032

Zephram Cochrane is born.  Cochrane will become a noted physicist, inventing warp drive in 2063 and making first contact with the Vulcans.

"Metamorphosis" (TOS).  Cochrane was eighty-seven at the time of his disappearance which was in or after 2119.

[Ares 4 Command Module]19 October.  The Ares 4 manned mission is sent to Mars.  The command module is lost in a graviton ellipse effect, and a rescue effort is mounted for the landing party on the Martian surface.

"One Small Step" (VGR).  Date given in subtitle.

2037

23 August.  The United States launches the space vehicle Charybdis, the third attempted human interstellar mission.  The Charybdis carries a crew of fifteen under the command of Colonel Stephen Richey.

"The Royale" (TNG).  Date given in dialogue.

Hovercars are developed, largely replacing ground cars for transportation.

"The 37's" (VGR).  One hundred years after the Briori abducted several humans from Earth (1937).

2038

7 February.  Contact is lost with the space vehicle Charybdis.

"The Royale" (TNG).  Date given on a computer screen.  The date actually reads "2-7-2088," but the date of launch reads "7-23-2087" while it is actually 2037.  Apparently the date was modified after the computer screens were generated, so I assume the date of loss would be similarly changed.  Incidentally, I will turn fifty-eight when Earth gets the bad news.  The Charybdis was actually taken by alien forces, though this won't be discovered until the episode (2364).

2040

Television has lost popularity to the point of being insignificant.

"The Neutral Zone" (TNG).  Year given in dialogue.

2053

[World War III]World War III, a nuclear conflict, comes to an end.  One of the major players was Colonel Green, and an enemy of the United States was the Eastern Coalition.  The total death toll is 600 million.

Star Trek: First Contact.  Colonel Green's participation is from "The Savage Curtain" (TOS).  "Space Seed" (TOS) strongly suggests that World War III and the Eugenics Wars, involving the famous Khan Singh, are the same event.  Although that episode gives an era of the 1990s for the conflict, later Star Trek (and Enterprise particularly) generally operate under the assumption that their universe is much more similar to our own, and we didn't experience a global conflict last decade.  As such, I am not directly referencing the Eugenics Wars in this timeline unless something more direct is said.  The reader is free to place them in the 1990s or early 2050s at their own discretion.

2063

5 April.  Doctor Zephram Cochrane successfully launches the Phoenix, a prototype warp ship.  The Vulcan scout ship T'Plana-Hath, passing through the Sol system, detects the Phoenix's warp signature and moves to investigate.  The Vulcans land at Cochrane's facility in Montana, on Earth, and make first contact with him and his team.

Star Trek: First Contact.  Date given in dialogue.  This was said to be ninety years before "Broken Bow" (ENT), but that figure was clearly rounded; it's actually eighty-eight.

2065

Vanik enters the Vulcan space program.

"Breaking the Ice" (ENT).  Seventy-six years before the episode (2151).

[The Valiant]The Valiant is launched from Earth on a mission of exploration.  She is lost in a magnetic storm.

"Where No Man Has Gone Before" (TOS).  Two hundred years before the episode (2265).  The Valiant was swept out of the galaxy and ultimately self-destructed, but this won't be discovered until the episode.

2067

The Friendship One warp probe is launched from Earth.

"Friendship One" (VGR).  Year given in dialogue.

[Conestoga]The Conestoga is launched under the command of Captain Mitchell to colonize Terra Nova.  The expedition is nicknamed "the great experiment."

"Terra Nova" (ENT).  Nine years before the colony arrived, which was five years before contact was lost, which was seventy years before the episode (2151).  The U.S.S. Excelsior will also be nicknamed "the great experiment" in the 2280s due to its transwarp drive, as seen in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.  Curiously, both great experiments failed.

2069

The last Klingon Emperor dies.  The High Council has gained enough strength that no new emperor succeeds him.  Instead, the Council rules the Klingon Empire, led by a chancellor.

"Rightful Heir" (TNG).  Three hundred years before the episode (2369).

The Terra 10 generation ship is launched from Earth.

"The Terratin Incident" (TAS).  Two-hundred years before the episode (2269).  This is the only relevant data point from the animated Star Trek series, since I am restricting my use of non-Enterprise sources to events affecting Earth at large, or other races mentioned in Enterprise.  The animated series also established a series of wars with the Kzinti during the mid twenty-first century in "The Slaver Weapon."  This episode was written by Larry Niven, who imported the Kzinti from his "Known Space" universe, including the backstory of conflict from the Man-Kzin Wars short story series.  Because these events are out of place in the mainstream Star Trek continuity, they are not referenced.  I mention them here so the reader can integrate them, or not, as he or she wishes.

2076

[Terra Nova]The colony ship Conestoga arrives at Terra Nova, where it is deconstructed to form the basis of the colony.

"Terra Nova" (ENT).  Five years before contact was lost, which was seventy years before the episode (2151).

Bernadette Fuller is born on Terra Nova.  After the asteroid strike of 2081, Fuller will become known simply as "Nadet."  She will develop lung cancer in her later years.

"Terra Nova" (ENT).  Nadet was seventy-five at the time of the episode (2151).

2081

An asteroid strikes Terra Nova.  Radiation from the asteroid poisons the rains on the planet, killing the adult Novans and forcing the children to live underground. The children eventually lose the knowledge that they are human, and blame humans for the poison rains. However, Novan civilization survives.

"Terra Nova" (ENT).  Seventy years before the episode.  (2151).

2086

[Sub-Commander T'Pol in 2151]T'Pol is born on Vulcan.  She will become science officer of Enterprise in 2151.

T'Pol's age was given as sixty-five in various interviews with actor Jolene Blalock.

2093

With the mutual arrangement of their parents, Koss and T'Pol are betrothed in a ceremony on Vulcan.

"Breaking the Ice" (ENT).  T'Pol described the arranged marriage.  The date is conjecture based on "Amok Time" (TOS), which suggests that Vulcan children are traditionally bonded at seven years of age.

2103

[Mars]Humans begin to colonize Mars.

"The 37's" (VGR).  Year given in dialogue.  Note that "Terra Nova" (ENT) establishes that Utopia Planitia was established as a settlement on Mars before 2067, when the Conestoga was launched.  This may be a continuity error, or it may be a differing definition of just what constitutes a "colony."  I am leaving the Voyager reference for completeness.

2112

[Captain Archer in 2151]Jonathan Archer is born in San Francisco.  His father is warp engineer Henry ArcherArcher will command Enterprise in 2151.

"Broken Bow" (ENT).  Archer was nine years old thirty years before the episode (2151).  There is some discrepancy over Archer's age as given in the script of "Broken Bow" (ENT).  He is described as being in his early forties in both the script and the original casting sheet.  Actor Scott Bakula, incidentally, was forty-seven at the time of the episode.

2113

[Earth]A planetary government is established on Earth, though not all nations are initially members.

Star Trek: First Contact.  Fifty years after the twenty-first century portion of the film (2063).

2119

The Warp Five Complex is dedicated for the development of advanced warp drive technology.  Doctor Zephram Cochrane is in attendance and gives a rousing speech.

"Broken Bow" (ENT).  Thirty-two years before the episode (2151).

[Commander Tucker in 2151]Charles Tucker III is born.  His father is Charles Tucker, Jr.  Tucker will become chief engineer of Enterprise in 2151.

Conjecture.  Tucker was said to be in his early 30s on the Enterprise casting sheet.

2121

Young Jonathan Archer builds a model Starfleet transport with his father.  Although he initially struggles, Archer successfully flies the remote-controlled vehicle on a beach near San Francisco.

"Broken Bow" (ENT).  Thirty years before the episode (2151).

[Lieutenant Reed in 2151]Malcolm Reed is born in England.  Reed will become the armory officer of Enterprise in 2151.

Conjecture.  Reed was said to be in his late 20s to early 30s on the Enterprise casting sheet.  He is English, so I assume he was born in England.

2123

[Travis mayweather in 2151]Travis Mayweather is born on a cargo ship traveling between Draylax and Vega Colony.  Mayweather will become helmsman of Enterprise in 2151.

Conjecture.  Mayweather was said to be in his mid to late 20s on the Enterprise casting sheet.  His unique place of birth was given in "Fortunate Son" (ENT).

27 November.  The SS Mariposa leaves Earth to colonize planets in the Ficus Sector.

"Up the Long Ladder" (TNG).  Date given in dialogue.

[Hoshi Sato in 2151]Hoshi Sato is born in Japan.  Sato will become communications officer of Enterprise in 2151.

Conjecture.  Sato was said to be in her mid to late 20s on the Enterprise casting sheet.  She was described as Japanese, rather than Japanese-American, so I assume she was born in Japan.  Her lack of a Japanese accent can probably be attributed to her skills as a linguist, though it's not at all impossible for people of any background to learn flawless English with enough practice.

2133

Travis Mayweather's family begins heading for Trillius Prime.  The trip will take three years.

"Broken Bow" (ENT).  Mayweather noted that the trip took the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades to complete.  This assumes that he was born in 2123 and was ten while in fourth grade.

2135

Travis Mayweather's family arrives at Trillius Prime.

"Broken Bow" (ENT).  When Mayweather was in sixth grade.  See above.

Charles Tucker takes tenth grade biology.  A Vulcan professor named Valec visits the class to teach about life on other planets.

"Strange New World" (ENT).  The year is conjecture, assuming Tucker was born in 2119 and was sixteen years old in the tenth grade.

2136

[Vanik]Vanik assumes command of the Ti'Mur.

"Breaking the Ice" (ENT).  Fifteen years before the episode (2151).

2139

Charles Tucker joins Starfleet.  He initially lives a few blocks from the Vulcan Compound in Sausalito.

"Unexpected" (ENT).  Twelve years before the episode (2151).  Tucker's living arrangement established in "Broken Bow" (ENT).

2140

[The Great Plume of Agosoria]The Great Plume of Agosoria occurs.

"Cold Front" (ENT).  Eleven years before the episode (2151).  The Plume occurs every eleven years, but I am only including the last occurrence prior to 2151 simply to avoid clutter.

2143

Jonathan Archer meets Charles Tucker for the first time.

"Unexpected" (ENT).  Eight years before the episode (2151).

2147

Jonathan Archer saves Charles Tucker's life.

"Unexpected" (ENT).  Four years before the episode (2151).  The details of this event weren't specified, but it may refer to the Omega training mission on Titan, referred to in "Strange New World" (ENT).

2150

January.  An epidemic begins on the A'kali homeworld due to tetrasianate 622 contamination from a hidden Malurian viridium mining facility, although the cause won't be discovered until Enterprise visits the planet in July 2151.  One of the first to contract the illness is Riann's brother.

"Civilization" (ENT).  Eighteen months before the episode (July 2151).

Australia joins the United Earth government.  It had been the final independent nation.

"Attached" (TNG).  Date given in dialogue.  There is some uncertainty over the idea that Australia was the sole hold-out in the world government.  Doctor Crusher was making a hypothetical comparison with a non-unified alien planet, saying "what if" Australia didn't join in 2150.  She doesn't explicitly say that there weren't other nations that later joined, but this has usually been assumed.

Sub-Commander T'Pol begins working at the Vulcan Compound on Earth.  She doesn't partake in any sight-seeing during her stay.

"Breaking the Ice" (ENT).  T'Pol lived among humans for about one year before the episode (2151).

2151

["Broken bow"]"Broken Bow" (ENT).  April.  First contact with the Klingons occurs on EarthEnterprise (NX-01) is launched early to return the stranded Klaang to KronosCaptain Archer discovers evidence of a temporal cold war fought by unknown adversaries and using the Suliban Cabal as soldiers in the current era.  After successfully completing the mission, Enterprise is ordered to begin exploration.  Sub-Commander T'Pol and Doctor Phlox remain aboard as permanent officers.

Captain Archer gave a date of April 16, 2151 during the episode.

Enterprise explores an alien planet after traversing an ion storm.  Despite initial reports that the planet is inhabited, they fail to make first contact.

Just after "Broken Bow" (ENT).  Archer calls the planet "inhabited," but "Fight or Flight" (ENT) states that the crew haven't made any first contacts.

On a planet with an argon-rich atmosphere, Ensign Sato collects a pet slug that she descriptively names Sluggo.

Before "Fight or Flight" (ENT).

["Fight or Flight"]"Fight or Flight" (ENT).  5-6 May.  The crew of Enterprise investigate an Axanar vessel whose crew has been killed and drained of fluid.  They succeed in sending a distress call using the Axanar com system.  The attackers return and attempt to capture Enterprise, but relations are established with another Axanar ship that destroys the unknown aliens.

The name of the attacking aliens was never given.  Captain Archer used a date of May 6, 2151 in his starlog near the end the episode.

"Strange New World" (ENT).  Enterprise begins surveying a Minshara-class planet.  An away team camps overnight on the planet, during which time they are driven to paranoid hallucination by psychotropic pollen.  Doctor Phlox successfully develops a cure for the pollen's effects.

Enterprise has been in "deep space" for three weeks.  Note that Tucker suggests that, were T'Pol to kill the crew of Enterprise, their bodies would hypothetically be found "six weeks into their historic voyage."  Because of the ambiguity inherent in both of these references, they aren't very useful in dating "Strange New World" relative to other episodes.

["Unexpected"] "Unexpected" (ENT).  A series of minor malfunctions plague Enterprise's systems.  The cause is found to be a Xyrillian stealth ship "hitch-hiking" in Enterprise's plasma trail.  Commander Tucker helps Xyrillian engineer Ah'Len repair their ship, but is accidentally impregnated by her.  Enterprise spends eight days searching for the Xyrillian ship and finds it in the plasma trail of a Klingon battlecruiserSub-Commander T'Pol convinces the Klingons to release the Xyrillians, and Tucker has the developing embryo transplanted into a Xyrillian host.

T'Pol says that Enterprise's visit to Kronos (in "Broken Bow" [ENT]) was less than one month ago.

"Terra Nova" (ENT).  Enterprise arrives at Terra Nova, where they discover the colony site abandoned.  Further investigation reveals that the Novans live underground, but their water supply is contaminated.  They are moved to another, uncontaminated continent.

Enterprise encounters a protostar not found on their Vulcan starcharts.

The week before "The Andorian Incident" (ENT).

[The Andorian Incident]"The Andorian Incident" (ENT).  Hoping to learn about Vulcan culture, Enterprise makes a stop at the Vulcan monastery of P'Jem.  However, the monastery has been captured by Andorians who accuse the Vulcans of using it as a base for spying on AndoriaCaptain Archer and Commander Tucker make efforts to fight the Andorians but ultimately discover that the Vulcans are, in fact, spying in violation of treaty.  The Andorians take the information to Andoria and Enterprise leaves P'Jem.

It has been nine weeks and four days since T'Pol began serving aboard Enterprise.

While exploring a planetary nebula, Enterprise detects a Vulcan starship nearby.  Enterprise makes attempts to contact the ship, but the Vulcans warp away with no explanation.

Three weeks before "Breaking the Ice" (ENT).  I conjecture that this event occurred after "The Andorian Incident" (ENT), since that episode gave no indication that Enterprise had encountered any Vulcans before coming across P'Jem.

"Breaking the Ice" (ENT).  Enterprise drops out of warp to investigate an extraordinarily large comet with eisilium deposits.  They are joined by the Vulcan starship T'Mur, which maintains observation of the human activity.  Lieutenant Reed and Ensign Mayweather land on the comet's nucleus to take a core sample.  After the Enterprise shuttlepod is stranded on the nucleus, the T'Mur uses it's tractor beam to rescue the away team.  Meanwhile, Sub-Commander T'Pol must decide between remaining aboard Enterprise and marrying her betrothed on Vulcan.  She decides to remain aboard Enterprise, and the T'Mur departs.

[Archer and Riann]"Civilization" (ENT).  July.  While scanning a preindustrial society, the A'kali, Enterprise detects an anachronistic antimatter reactor.  Captain Archer leads an undercover away team to investigate, but they are caught by Riann, a local apothecary investigating a sickness centered near the reactor.  Riann and Archer witness crates being tractored aboard a Malurian shuttle, and ultimately discover a viridium mining operation powered by the antimatter reactor.  Tetrasianate 622 from this mining operation is responsible for the epidemic.  After Enterprise defeats the Malurian mother ship and convinces them to leave, the mining facility is removed.  Enterprise departs and Riann disperses a cure to her people, agreeing to not reveal the existence of alien races and spacecraft.

Captain Archer's starlog at the end of the episode was dated 31 July 2151.  Unfortunately, there is no way to know how much time, if any, passed between the main body of the episode and this starlog.  Enterprise removed large amounts of mining equipment, which may or may not have been effected quickly with the primitive transporter.  However, it is safe to say that no more than a few days could have passed, and the writer's likely intended for even less.  Another interesting note it that Enterprise is seventy-eight light years out at this point.

Nausicaan pirates attack the E.C.S. Fortunate.  The Fortunate crew successfully defends the ship, but not without severe damage.  One Nausicaan is captured alive and held prisoner as the Fortunate sends a distress signal.

Just before "Fortunate Son" (ENT).

"Fortunate Son" (ENT).  Admiral Forrest orders Enterprise to reverse course and respond to a distress call sent by the E.C.S. Fortunate.  Upon arrival, they find the Fortunate under the command of her first officer, Matthew Ryan.  Repairs are effected, but Captain Archer threatens to reverse the aid when a Nausicaan prisoner is discovered.  The Fortunate warps away, following a Nausicaan attacker, but is led into an ambush.  Enterprise arrives and negotiates the release of the prisoner in exchange for the Fortunate's escape.

[Archer confronts Silik]"Cold Front" (ENT).  Enterprise diverts into a stellar nursery to contact alien vessels detected inside.  They discover a religious pilgrimage to watch the Great Plume of Agosoria and invite the aliens to observe from aboard Enterprise.  One of the pilgrims is actually Silik, paradoxically sent to prevent the destruction of Enterprise.  However, Crewman Daniels reveals himself to be an agent from the thirty-first century intent on capturing Silik.  Despite Silik's apparent aid, Captain Archer chooses to help Daniels.  Unfortunately, Silik kills Daniels and escapes.  Archer orders Daniels's quarters sealed and Enterprise leaves the stellar nursery.

According to Archer and T'Pol, Enterprise has presently been underway for four months, three weeks, and six days.

2769

Anthropologists travel back in time to observe the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza.

"Cold Front" (ENT).  Date given by Daniels, who pointed out the event to Archer while viewing the temporal observatory.

3151

A temporal cold war is fought on many fronts throughout time.  The enforcers of the Temporal Accords send Daniels to 2151, undercover aboard Enterprise, to apprehend Silik and identify his commander and their purpose.  The mission is a failure.

"Cold Front" (ENT).  Nine hundred years after the episode.  The participants and the various fronts of the war are largely unknown.  The humanoid figure originates in a previous century, but which is unclear.
