adaptive syntax. A linguistic form. Klingon dialects are constructed on an adaptive syntax. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
adrenal gland. A endocrine organ that produces a variety of biochemical substances in humans, including steroids. Nausicaan adrenal glands produce a unique odor. ("Fight or Flight" [ENT]). Editor's Note: "Adrenal" means "near the kidneys." It isn't clear if the Nausicaan glands are analogous to the human glands in function or simply location.
Ah'Len.
(Julianne Christie). A friendly Xyrillian
engineer. Ah'Len accidentally impregnated Commander
Tucker in 2151 while he was aboard her
ship to aid in repairs. ("Unexpected"
[ENT]).
Alex. A Starfleet engineer serving aboard Enterprise. Alex activated the warp core prior to the ship's launch in 2151. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
Altarian marsupial. A species of small alien mammal that produces droppings with the greatest concentration of regenerative enzymes found in known space. Doctor Phlox keeps an Altarian marsupial aboard Enterprise. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
alveoli cluster. A group of tiny, thin-walled, capillary-rich sacs occurring closely together in the lungs where the exchange of gasses takes place. The genetically engineered Suliban possess alveoli clusters that are modified to process different kinds of atmospheres. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
Amazon River. A river in South America, flowing from the Andes in Peru across northern Brazil into the Atlantic Ocean, some 6,437 kilometers. Ensign Sato once took a hydro-skimmer up an Amazon tributary. ("Fight or Flight" [ENT]).
Amazon University. A school located in Brazil. Ensign Sato taught alien language at Amazon University while on leave from Starfleet just before the launch of Enterprise in 2151. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
anaconda.
A very long, heavy South American
boa (Eunectes murinus) that lives in trees and water. Ensign
Sato is afraid of anacondas. ("Fight
or Flight" [ENT]).
Anchorage. A city in southern Alaska, on Cook Inlet. Commander Tucker viewed a stellar nursery through the telescope outside Anchorage. ("Fight or Flight" [ENT]).
Andoria. A planet, homeworld of the Andorians. Andoria is located near Vulcan. Vulcans at the monastery of P'Jem used advanced sensor technology to spy on Andoria in violation of treaty. ("The Andorian Incident" [ENT]). Andoria has also been referred to as Andor.
Andorian Imperial Guard. A military organization originating on Andoria. Shran and his team are members of the Andorian Imperial Guard. ("The Andorian Incident" [ENT]).
Andorians.
An intelligent species native to Andoria, noted for their
blue skin, white hair, and twin antennae. The Andorians are rivals to the Vulcans,
their interstellar neighbors. The two races signed a peace treaty.
In 2151, members of the Andorian
Imperial Guard discovered that the Vulcans were
violating that treaty by spying on Andoria from P'Jem.
("The Andorian Incident"
[ENT]). The Andorians were first seen in "Journey to Babel"
(TOS), which also hinted at aggression with the Vulcans.
However, we know little about their culture. Several variations in
Andorian appearance have been seen: those in "Journey to Babel" had
antennae near the back of the head, a couple in Star Trek: The Motion
Picture had very small antennae on the forehead, and a holographic Andorian
in "The Offspring" (TNG) had long, stiff antennae from the top of the
head.
antsy. A slang term for "restless." Commander Tucker was antsy with regard to boarding the Axanar ship in 2151. ("Fight or Flight" [ENT]).
anti-grav unit. A device which counteracts the force of gravity. Henry and Jonathan Archer used a small anti-grav unit to allow their model Starfleet transport to fly in 2121. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
ape. A primate that has no tail. Silik insulted Captain Archer in 2151 by comparing the human genome to that of an ape. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
aphrodisiac. An agent that arouses sexual desire. Many species use triglobulin as an aphrodisiac. Humans historically used the bile of black bears and ground rhinoceros horns. ("Fight or Flight" [ENT]).
Archer, Henry. (Mark Moses). The father of Captain Archer. Henry Archer was a member of Doctor Cochrane's team to develop the Warp 5 engine, and is considered the principal designer of Enterprise. He died before he could see the ship launch under his son's command in 2151. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
Archer,
Captain Jonathan. (Scott Bakula). Commanding officer of Enterprise.
Archer was born in San Francisco in 2112,
the son of warp engineer Henry Archer.
While a boy growing up in California, Archer and his father enjoyed building
and flying model rockets. ("Broken
Bow" [ENT]). Archer joined Starfleet
and became a respected officer with a great deal of influence, owing to his
natural command ability and explorer spirit. He met Charles
Tucker in 2143, and quickly became close
friends with the engineer. Archer even saved Tucker's
life in 2147. ("Unexpected"
[ENT]). In 2151,
he assumed command of Enterprise and
oversaw her final construction. When Klaang
crashed on Earth, Archer pushed to bring the Klingon
back to Kronos aboard Enterprise,
in part to prove humanity's worth to the Vulcans,
who Archer believes held back human progress.
Starfleet agreed, and the mission was a success,
but not without some difficulty. Archer learned that the Suliban
are operatives in a temporal cold war
while rescuing the abducted Klaang. After the
mission, Archer requested that temporary Vulcan
science officer Sub-Commander T'Pol
and alien specialist Doctor Phlox remain
aboard as permanent crew members. Archer has a pet beagle
named Porthos that he keeps aboard Enterprise.
("Broken
Bow" [ENT]). Young Archer was played by Matt Davis.
argon lamp. A light-producing device that increases argon levels in an atmosphere. Doctor Phlox used an argon lamp in an unsuccessful attempt to make a suitable environment for Sluggo. ("Fight or Flight" [ENT]).
astrometric computer. A powerful processing unit located in San Francisco. Sub-Commander T'Pol felt that the astrometric computer was better suited to tracking Suliban cell ships than those aboard Enterprise, recommending that Captain Archer abort their mission to Kronos in 2151. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
autonomic system. A part of the nervous system that regulates involuntary action. Klaang's autonomic system was disrupted by the blast from Moore's plasma rifle in 2151. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
auto-sequencer. A component of the transporter that must be brought online prior to use. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
auxiliary power. An emergency power system aboard Enterprise, activated when main power fails. ("Broken Bow" [ENT]).
Axanar.
An intelligent space-faring
species. The Axanar are hairless, androgynous humanoids with leathery
skin and green blood. They breathe a nitrogen-methane atmosphere and
their zymuth glands produce triglobulin.
The Axanar lifespan is roughly four hundred years. In 2151,
an Axanar ship was overrun by unknown aliens that killed the crew and drained
their bodies of fluid to extract triglobulin.
Enterprise discovered the ship and sent
a distress call using her systems. When another Axanar ship responded,
first contact was made. ("Fight or
Flight" [ENT]). The planet Axanar was
referred to several times in the original Star Trek series.
Captain Kirk was said to have received an award called the Palm Leaf of the
Axanar Peace Mission in "Court Martial" (TOS). Renowned
Captain Garth fought a battle at Axanar, and Kirk visited the planet as a
new-fledged cadet, apparently as part of the aforementioned peace mission.
Axanar starship. A type of interstellar vessel. Axanar starships are roughly ninety-two meters in length, and have at least two external hatches. They are armed with beam weapons. ("Fight or Flight" [ENT]). The Axanar starship was similar to a twenty-fourth century Cardassian freighter in configuration.
