Message from our President
Hello Fellow Lions,
We are off to a great year and we have a lot to be excited about! Membership has increased; we have added
two additional food events this year, and two of our club members are Zone Chairmen (Lion Linda Flores Zone 1,
and Lion Ron Hudson Zone 2). Our club is strong and we need to thank each other for making it happen. It’s
good to be a Lion.
Our membership is now up to 46 members and soon will be 47. This is in part due to the transfer of 4 members
from the Central Fremont Lions Club into our club. Not only did we receive 4 great members; we also acquired
another Leos Club, a storage shed in Newark, a pancake grill, and lots of other great items. Our membership
chairman, Lion Ed Shannon, has already submitted his membership plan to the district chairman (I think Lion Ed
was the first to do so), and was asked to speak at a membership training session. We will probably see some
attrition this year, so we need to push forward with new member recruiting. Don’t forget that we can make a
potential Lions participation fit that member. If they can’t make club meetings but can work at and/or chair
events, that’s fine. And if you’re an existing member that needs to adjust your Lions schedule due to your work
or family situation, we can still accommodate you. Volunteering when and how you can is great. If you are the
sponsor of a member that we have not seen in a while, please give them a call to see how they are doing.
This year will be the first year that I can remember (of my 3+ years with the club) that we are planning 3
food-based fundraisers in our fiscal year. These include the Fremont Festival of the Arts, Newark Days, and a
Pancake Breakfast at Irvington High School. These 3 events will spread out our major fundraising activities
and reduce our risk for the year. Of course, the Fremont Festival of the Arts has been our major fundraiser,
but having 2 others gives us a better comfort level. The Berkeley Lions have made up to $17,000 at their
pancake breakfast. This shows us what Lions can do. We have budgeted this event very conservatively this year
since it will be our first time working the event. Our Newark Days kabob booth will be similar to the Fremont
Festival of the Arts, but with a Friday night added and a considerably smaller attendance.
We have seen great support from both of our Leos clubs and we are only 2 months into the year. If you are the
chairperson for an event, don’t forget to get the Leos involved. They work extremely hard and have a great time.
Please remember that I am always here to discuss any Lions matters you may have. I have adjusted my travel
schedule so that I am in town the 3 weeks per month that we have meetings (2 club, 1 board). E-mail works great
and I will do my best to get back to you as soon as I can.
Yours in Lionism,
Lion John Weeks Club President
